Experimental Psychology
Student Comments -  Spring 1999/Summer 1999/Fall 1998
back to Student Comments     -      back to Courses I Teach

The strengths of this course were the variety of teaching tools/methods; notes/outlined clearly;
numerous examples given; only once a week. The weaknesses of this course were no lab with
the course. I would have liked to review and elaborate on a “famous” psych. research article with
the class.

The strengths of this course were access to computer knowledge (SPSS 8.0), information on web
page, and an excellent teacher. The weaknesses of this course were the book.

The strengths of this course were that the objectives covered will be useful in the field of
psychology and the instructor knew the material and was fair in regards to grading and excused
absences. The weaknesses of this course were that the paper was a real doozie. There should have
been some quizzes. Suggestions for improvement or additional comments were that there should
have only been one paper and the tests should have counted for more.

The strengths of this course were that the subject matter was demanding. The professor did an
outstanding job of challenging students, while making sure that everyone kept up also.

The strengths of this course were Dr. Whatley making the material interesting. He was on the
students’ level. The weaknesses of this course was that the course could use a lab.

The strengths of this course were that it helped me to create better study and work habits. I
learned how to discipline myself as far as doing assignments. The course strengthened my
knowledge of experimental designs and concepts learned in statistics. The weaknesses
of this course was that I did not learn much more than I haven’t already accumulated
through my other psychology courses. The objective of the course was to learn how to
set up experiments and relate our knowledge in writing. The emphasis on grading the
papers severely created more of an interest in completing the paper than learning how
to do it. Suggestions for improvement or additional comments included doing one paper. Spend
the entire semester on a complicated task with emphasis on doing everything correctly.

The strengths of this course were Dr. Whatley fully explaining how to write the experimental paper
that we were assigned to do. He is a good teacher, there should be more professors like him
(especially in the department). He has personality. A lot of psychology professors are deprived of
this. The weaknesses of this course were not having one more paper to write.

The strengths of this course were that I really liked the clips of videos we watched that tied in
what research we were conducting to something we could see. The research was interesting that
we did. I liked the relaxed atmosphere that Dr. Whatley created in his classroom.

The weaknesses of this course were that the course needs a lab and there needs to be more tests.

The strengths of this course were the videos, slide presentations, and outlines. Suggestions for
improvement or additional comments include adding a lab to the course.

The weaknesses of this course include that the class is too hard for it not to have a lab. Suggestions
for improvement or additional comments include that this course needs a lab!

The weaknesses of this course were that this class really should meet for longer periods of time
per meeting. Three days a week, 50 minutes per class would be better used as 2 days a week,
1 1/2 hour classes.

The weaknesses of this course include that it was a boring subject.

The strengths of this course include that the web site was the biggest help! Actually doing the
experiments help the learning process. Great hands on! Suggestions for improvement or additional
comments include that Dr. Whatley might want to cut back to only one experiment.

The strengths of this course were the well organized teaching methods. The weaknesses of this
course were the strict grading procedures and difficulty of the papers assigned. Suggestions for
improvement or additional comments include explaining better the correct way to write papers.

The strengths of this course were that Dr. Whatley always made sure all instructions were clear
and if they weren’t he made all possible attempts to make them clear. Always available for help
including office hours and non-office hours.
