Formatting an APA Style Paper in Microsoft Word
                                                                             back to Experimental Homepage

Before you begin typing, you must set up your paper to accommodate APA style. To set

the margins, you will need to click the left mouse button on “File” in the Standard Tool menu bar

located at the top of the page. Scroll down to “Page Setup” and click the left mouse button.

Make sure the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right margins are set to 1”. Before you select “OK” at the

bottom of the page, you need to set where the header will go. In the same menu near the bottom,

you should see “Header” and it will probably be correctly set to 0.5”. If  the header is not set to

0.5", then you will need to change that setting to 0.5”. Now you can click the left mouse button on

the “OK” button at the bottom of the menu.

To set the line spacing to 2” simply click the left mouse button on “Format” in the

Standard Tool menu bar located at the top of the page. Once you have selected “Format,”

another menu will appear. Scroll down and select “Paragraph” by clicking the left mouse button.

Click the left mouse button on the arrowhead under “Line Spacing” and scroll down to “Double”

and click the left mouse button. DO NOT click “OK” just yet. While you are still in this menu, you

need to disable the widow/orphan option which is the default in Word. Click on the top tab

that says "Line and PageBreaks." Under "Pagination," you should see a box next to "Widow/

Orphan control" that has a check mark in it. To remove the check mark, you need to click

on that box. Now you can click on “OK.”

Once you have set the line spacing on your paper, you need to create a header. To create

a header, click the left mouse button on “View” in the Standard Tool menu bar. Scroll down to

“Header and Footer” and click the left mouse button. A rectangular dotted-line box should

appear with a small menu bar beneath. Before you begin typing your header, make sure your font

size is set to “12.” Once you have finished typing your header, space over 5 spaces and then click

the left mouse button on the “#” located in the small menu bar beneath. The number “1” should

now appear to the right of your header. Now, you must align the header to be flush with the right

margin. To make the header flush with the right margin, go to the Formatting Tool menu bar

(typically the third row of tool bars from the top) and select the 3rd button choice to the right of

the “U”. Once you have selected this button, you should see that you header is now flush with the

right margin. Then, click the left mouse button on the “Close” button in that small menu bar beneath

your header. You will notice that your header has disappeared. Do not panic. The header only

shows up when you print your paper. Now, you are ready to begin typing your paper.
