It is not unusual to report one or more graphic figures in the Results section. Quite often these figures include bar graphs and/or line graphs. Any time an article refers to a figure or table, that figure or table must be cited in the text. For example, in the current Results section a bar graph is referred to: (see Figure 1). Of course the figure is not included in the actual text of the manuscript. Instead, it is included at the end of the manuscript. Refer to section 3.83 in the APA Manual for specific instructions in Identifying and Citing Figures. Note also that the figure captions do not appear on the figures submitted by the author. The figure captions appear on a separate page at the end of the manuscript. See section 5.22 of the APA Manual for specific instruction on preparing a figure caption page. As for a good general rule for writing captions for bar and line graphs, try using both the independent variable and dependent variable in the caption. For example, “Number of words recalled as a function of learning technique.”
