Topic Web Site Developed by Celia Strickland

 

 This unit has been developed for and with the assistance of Mrs. Ellen Howard's second grade class at Williams Heights Elementary in Waycross, Georgia by Celia Strickland, Valdosta State University Preservice Teacher.

This unit consists of integrated activities designed to meet the Georgia QCC Standards that accompany them.  Fun and educational web sites are supplied for use with the activities, as well as for additional research.


Fun and Educational Web Sites
1. Native American Tribes and Their Cultures
Learn about the lifestyles and legends of the five cultures of Native Americans who were the first inhabitants of America.
2. The Navajo Nation

Research this southwestern nation to learn more about their art, food, shelter, children, and legends. These Native Americans actually lived in tee pees.
3. The Chumash Nation
 

This California-Intermountain  nation held many great traditions in clothing, games, and culture.  This excellent site was developed by a third grade class.
4. The Chinook Nation

Learn about this nation that inhabited the northwest corner of the United States.  Find the  differences in this culture and other Native Americans.
5. The Creek Nation

The Creek legends are very interesting.  Learn how the world was made according to the Creek legends. Just click on some of the legends maintained by this site.
6. The Powhatans

A great web site adapted to the young reader full of information about the Powhatan Confederacy.  You will need to scroll down to reach the many interesting links contained in the site.
7. Samoset and Squanto
"The English speaking Indian who helped the Pilgrims" by Stan Griffin.  An excellent account of how Samoset led Squanto to help the Pilgrims.
8.  Compton's Encyclopedia
Squanto and Samoset
Research the lives of Squanto, Samoset, Wiliam Bradford, and all of the key people responsible for the beginning colonies.  Discover how the Pilgrims survived the first winter in this strange new land.
9. The History of Plymouth

This site gives links to an entire unit on Colonial America.  Read the real story of Powhatan, Pocahontas, and John Smith.  Take the quiz at the end of the unit to see how well you read.
10. The Thanksgiving Story
Take a quiz about Thanksgiving to find out how much you know about the holiday.  You might be surprised by the answers.

Explore links to child centered pages packed full of information about the first settlers and Wampanoag history.  Discover how friendships were made between two culturally different groups.

 

Integrated Activities for  Children

Activity 1 1.  Describe Activity Take yourself back to the time of the Creek Indians.  Read several Creek Indian legends from this site and then write your own legend about something you have always wondered about.  You may want to know how a dog got his bark, or a fish got his wiggle. You may illustrate your legend using the Paint program. Remember, these tales may be handed down for centuries, so do a good job! 2.  Grade Level Second 3.  Subject Area Language Arts and Fine Arts 4.  Georgia QCC Standards LA2.51  Recognizes cultural diversity represented in literature.

FA2.4 Creates artworks based on close observation of familiar objects     (representational artworks).
 

Activity 2
1.  Describe Activity Pretend you are a friend of Squanto, and would like to tell others about the Pilgrim's first year in America.  The only problem is that you do not write with letters.  Visit the sites above and learn about the Native Americans who helped the Pilgrims.  Then go to the Picture Dictionary and the story of the First Thanksgiving, and use these symbols to tell others your story. You may write the words under the pictures for your English speaking friends. 2.  Grade Level Second 3.  Subject Area Social Studies and Fine Arts 4.  Georgia QCC Standards SS2.13  Describes the customs and lifestyles of the Early American settlers in Plymouth and Jamestown colonies.

FA2.6  Discusses how culture and environment provide inspiration for creating artworks.
 FA2.7 Applies concepts and ideas from another discipline and its topics as sources of ideas for own artworks. *Please visit our page full of samples of the activities listed above.  These stories and artworks were completed by Macie, Jeremy, Adrian, and Hank.  They did a great job!
