Introduction to Georgia Is Just Peachy

     Georgia is one of the oldest states in the United States of America.  If you look at the U.S. flag, Georgia is the fourth star from the left on the top row.  Georgia has many interesting symbols ranging from insects to beautiful flowers.  One of the symbols is one that many people catch when fishing.  Another is one that we like to sit under during the hot Georgia summers.  Let's explore and find out what these and other symbols of Georgia are.  You'll also learn about one of Georgia's treasures.

1. When was Georgia's flag officially adopted?  To find the answer click on  the highlighted word.

Mission #1
Congratulations!  You have just been chosen to write an article for a science magazine on the life cycle of sea turtles in Georgia.  Once you have learned about the sea turtles, write a short article in your own words for the magazine.  You must also provide an illustration for the article, so draw pictures with captions describing the life cycle of the turtles.  Once you have completed the article and illustrations, it is ready to be published in the magazine.  Follow the steps below to complete the mission.

STEPS

Step 1-  Click here to find information about the Loggerhead
              turtles and pictures.

Step 2-  Scroll down to the article and read it.  Take notes as
             you read.

Step 3-  Write an article on the information you've read, and
              use markers to illustrate the life cycle of the turtles.

Step 4-  Share your article with the class.

Mission #2
Wow, what an honor!  Because of your expertise on Georgia, you have been asked to design a postcard using some of the state symbols.  The postcard must be three inches long and five inches wide.  It must also include a picture of the state flag, flower, bird, and tree.  Good luck on your design.

STEPS

Step 1-  Go to this web site to find a list of Georgia symbols.

Step 2-  Make a list of the symbols you would like to use on your postcard.

Step 3-  Use a ruler to measure a piece of card stock 3 in. long and 5 in. wide.

Step 4-  Cut the card stock out, and draw your symbols on it with the markers.
             Be sure to write a caption under each symbol, and a heading at the top.
