The following tests are measures different components of your health lifestyle - it does require you to log in to this site.
This site by mental help is a great overview of the different theories of what causes stress and how to reduce stress. This is part of a general self help book - here is the link to the table of contents. Also take a look again at Mind Tools - they have a section on stress reduction.

Chapter 13 exercises - Health Psychology NOTE: Make sure that you reword this information in YOUR words. If you just copy word for word from the book or links, the assignment will not count. In addition, if you can't find the material on the web site, try using your book.

EXERCISE 1 - Defense mechanism
One technique that we use to cope with our world is defense mechanisms (listed on pages 472-474 in your book and also at this website). Describe 4 different types of defense mechanisms. Give an example of each (use a different one that ones listed on the website or in the book - think of your own!). How might they help us relieve stress (use this website to help with that question if you are not sure).

EXERCISE 2- Type A and B personality.
This test measures how Type A or B your personality is as does this one. Or take the test in your book. This site helps explain what it is as does your book.
1. What is Type A and B personality? What did you score on the test?
2. What has Type A personality been linked with healthwise?
3. How might this correlation be explained? In other words, what part of being type A influences your health?

*EXERCISE 3 - Sport Psychology
What is Sport Psychology? These web pages can answer your questions! Either try this site,  APA division 47 (and look under About Division 47), or AAASP - they are different sites so if you are really interested, look at both of them. The first one is the most detailed - you will probably find the information easier to obtain using the second 2 sites.

2. How can you be trained to be a sport psychologist?
3. What does a sport psychologist do (why do they contact a sport psychologist)?

David L. Hoffman writes on stress.
1. What are the 3 general theories about stress? Which theory is supported by recent research?
2. What are some of the different ways we respond physically and psychologically to stress?
3. Describe 3 of the different factors that can influence our perception of stress.
4. There seems to be a relationship between stress and illness. How do 2 factors associated with stress relate to illness?

*EXERCISE 5 - Psychoneuroimmunology
Look at your book and at this website
1. What is psychoneuroimmunology about?
2. Give 3 examples of studies that show how stress can affect your body and your health. If you want some more examples, look at this page at Discover and the connecting links.
