Last night there was a campus organizations meeting, a group of us from the
Philosophy and Religious Studies Club went to the meeting and got revved up
for the year. Next, we need to have an election for our leaders
(President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary). If you are
elected to these positions, you will be responsible for choosing events and
reserving rooms for our events on campus. You must email me if you are
interested in running for office! chjames@valdosta.edu And a
special thanks to Jason Lewis, Brian Campbell, Demarcus Marshall and Ben
Speight who came to last night's meeting!
Take care,
Christine James

I also have copies of the calls for papers posted by my office door, as do
Dr. Santas and Dr. Hill. And please feel free to ask me any questions about
the process, I'm here to help!
I also contacted Joe Newton last week about setting up a listserv for the
Philosophy Club (thanks to Ari Santas for the suggestion) - hopefully that
will be set up soon!

Here's the Philosophy News
for 10/28/02!
Don't forget the two movie
nights coming up tomorrow and next Monday; everyone is welcome, it is free,
and you can come to one movie or to both! Tuesday, October 29, 2002 from 6-10pm in the Powell Auditorium
will be a double feature of environmental movies (in honor of Ari Santas'
Environmental Ethics class)! At 6pm
we will show Erin Brockovich, and at 8pm
we will show Local Hero!
Monday, November 4, 2002 from 6-10pm
in the New
Science
Building
Auditorium will be a double feature of movies about the electoral process,
popularity, and race! At 6pm
we will show Bulworth, and at 8pm
we will show Bamboozled!
The new Department of
Philosophy website has added information. Go to http://teach.valdosta.edu/phi/
and scroll down and look for the 'Contact VSU Student Groups' button, and you
can see a full list of the VSU Student Groups and their officers. You can
email or call the people listed next to a group if you are interested in
working with them! The site also features flyers for our spring classes
and a new PowerPoint presentation on careers for Philosophy majors!
Because PowerPoint on the web uses some complex Java script, it works best on
Explorer, rather than Netscape. (You can also click on the movie box photos
to read articles about the movies we will see at the upcoming movie nights!)
If you need any tutoring
in the 2000-level PHIL or REL classes, you can contact these fellow students
for help: Mike Holt, z_mikeh@yahoo.com
and Jessica Corbin, jmcorbin@valdosta.edu
and Jimbo Hitchcock, meno11111@yahoo.com
This semester's new Phi
Sigma Tau Philosophy Honorary members have been notified, a big
congratulations to the 61 people who will soon be inducted. If you
didn't make it this semester, keep in mind that we will do a registrar search
again next semester after the fall grades are in. So, stay motivated, and one
more A in a PHIL class may mean you will qualify in the Spring!
(If you received a letter
stating that you have qualified for Phi Sigma Tau, but did not receive an
email from Dr. James, please contact Dr. James at chjames@valdosta.edu , it is
imperative that we be able to reach you by email!)
The Philosophy Club is
always looking for new ideas and new events to have on campus! Please
feel free to contact the President, Jessica Corbin, at jmcorbin@valdosta.edu or me with any
suggestions!

Philosophy news for
October 10, 2002!
Don't forget the
gatherings happening tomorrow, Friday October 11! A Symposium on Love
will be held in Ari Santas' Ancient Philosophy Class, in West Hall 104 at 1-3pm, and then a party will be
held at Mike Stoltzfus' home at 701 Pineridge Drive (which
is close to the corner of Azalea and Gornto, off of the Loganberry Circle.)
Everyone is welcome, there will be food, drink, family, and probably a few
nice dogs!
The next Philosophical
Movie Nights have been set!
First, Tuesday, October 29, 2002
from 6-10pm in the Powell
Auditorium will be a double feature of environmental movies (in honor of Ari
Santas' Environmental Ethics class)! At 6pm
we will show Erin Brockovich, and at 8pm
we will show Local Hero!
Next up, Monday, November 4, 2002
from 6-10pm in the New
Science
Building
Auditorium will be a double feature of movies about the electoral process,
popularity, and race. At 6pm
we will show Bulworth, and at 8pm
we will show Bamboozled!
The quest to get the Phi
Sigma Tau honorary chapter set up on campus is going well, the information
services folks have done wonders with a long computer search, and the
informal count of qualified students is 81 - great work! You will get
more information soon!
We have arranged for
surplus furniture to be added to the "rotunda" in Ashley Hall, so
everyone who is a friend of Philosophy can hang out and study in that space -
two large table/desks, six office chairs, two smaller chairs, two smaller
tables, a bookcase, and a lamp will make it very comfortable; and it should
be in place sometime next week!
The Philosophy Department
website has been updated with more information! There are articles
about the movies coming up on the first page,
http://teach.valdosta.edu/phi/
and there is a list of
information for all the Student Groups at VSU, at the url
http://teach.valdosta.edu/phi/stuorg.htm
(special thanks to Robin Vickery and especially her assistant Trisha on that
one!)
As always, just let me
know if there is something else you think we should include on the web!
Keep in mind, our Spring
class offerings will be a lot of fun - Jim Hill's 4800C on the Matrix, James'
4800A on Comedy, Santas' Business Ethics 3150, and James' 3100 Medical Ethics/Health
Care are all excellent and do not have any prerequired Philosophy coursework
- we would all love to have you in class! The Philosophy Faculty are
now setting up our Summer and Fall teaching schedules if anyone has any
questions about what will be offered, you can check in with us!

Thank you again to
everyone who came to see Dogma on Monday night! It was a great success, we
filled the theatre, and we had a fine election turn out!
Congratulations to our new officers who are:

Leonard Howard: wlhoward@bellsouth.net
Secretary Cocoa
Williams: cocoamichelle@yahoo.com
Treasurer Krystal
Carver: bartedgar@msn.com
Also, big thanks to two other
Philosophy majors who have volunteered to serve in any alternate/auxiliary/ex
officio way we might need:
James "Jimbo"
Hitchcock: meno11111@yahoo.com
Amos Batts:
acbatts@valdosta.edu
Thanks very much to Brad

And applause and thanks to
the former president of the philosophy club, Mike Holt: z_mikeh@yahoo.com
Our department website
http://teach.valdosta.edu/phi/ has been updated with a ton of new
information. We were thinking about showing Bamboozled or Erin Brockovich for
the next Philosophical Movie night on October 28, you can see the pictures of
the movie boxes and link to articles on each one: there is an interview with
Spike Lee and a page with a list of professors who write on the chemical
industry like Erin Brockovich Ellis - see which movie looks like a better
pick and let us all know!
Maybe Powell Auditorium
might be a better choice of location for our movies, if the sound system in
the UC Theatre doesn't get fixed soon. We could also try to have
double-features, two movies in two locations on the same night.
We also added a list of
the major and minor requirements (also available in the Undergraduate
Catalog), and a link to Valdosta Community Events (the
community calendar Jane Osborn does).
Coming soon to the site
will be: a list of contacts for Student Activities Groups at VSU, and further
information on those who have qualified for Phi Sigma Tau honors! (Jim
Strickland is doing the programming for a search within the registrar's
information system now.)
Speaking of events in the
area, an important event is happening on Saturday - Dr. Linda Bennett Elder
from our religion department is part of Critical Resistance South, and they
are having a conference at the UC Magnolia Room on Saturday. It only costs $5
and you get food (both the kind that you can eat, and the kind that's food
for thought!) Please check it out!
"Organizing for
Justice in the Rural South: Beyond the Prison-Industrial Complex, presented
by Critical Resistance South. 10:00
AM - 5:00 PM, Valdosta State University, Magnolia Room.
Registration $5.00 includes lunch. Do you have experience fighting against
environmental racism? Concerned about attacks on immigrants? Do you know
someone in prison? Do you want to connect with others across the rural South?
Call Bob Elder for further information at 229-245-8036."

Philosophy Club news
9/27/02!
Remember, DOGMA Monday
night 9/30/02
in the UC Theatre at 8pm!
All the upper-number
spring Philosophy classes have fliers. I posted them in all the campus
buildings and gave them to all faculty members - if you don't see these
fliers, email me to let me know and I will make sure they get out into the
world!
PHIL 3100 Ethics and
Health Care (how traditional medical ethics has changed in the context of
nursing and postmodern/critical theory, James)
PHIL 3150 Business Ethics (Bhopal and
many other corporate decisions, Santas)
PHIL 4800A Philosophy,
Comedy, and Film (race, economic class, and gender in a lot of movies and
comedy tv shows, James)
PHIL 4800C The Matrix and
Philosophy (philosophy of mind, Descartes and Kant in the movie The Matrix;
with Jim Hill before his retirement)
I have three new pamphlets
about Philosophy that you are welcome to pick up:
Jobs for Philosophy
Majors,
How majoring in Philosophy
can help you get into graduate school or get a job, and
Classes required for the
major and minor!
Have now received three
email confirmations from three people for the four Philosophy Club officers positions
available:
President: Jessica Corbin
VP: Leonard Howard
Secretary: Cocoa
Williams
Treasurer: none
We do still absolutely
have room on the ballot, so please email me to run for office!
chjames@valdosta.edu We do have to go through a balloted election
process according to the bylaws, even if people are running unopposed. To see
a description of the duties, which are not time consuming, see
http://teach.valdosta.edu/phi/pcave2.htm and scroll on down!
I noticed in talking with
a lot of students that there is a lack of "community" feeling on
campus and not a lot of information about student group activities. I checked
in with the secretary at Student Activities, and she promised she will send
me a complete list of all the student activities groups, their presidents,
and their email/phone as soon as she gets it done (hopefully in a
week). As soon as I have it, I will put it on the internet at our
department website so people can find the leaders of activities they would
like to join - and so the Philosophy Club can arrange some debates and
co-sponsored movies and events!
The Phi Sigma Tau
information packet has arrived!!! The Information Services people are
working on generating a list of eligible students! I'm really looking forward
to it, and I bet a lot of you qualify right away: top 35% of your yearly
class (grads of 2003, 2004, 2005) and at least two PHIL classes with one A/A-
and one B!
There will be a Majors
Fair on Wednesday 10/2 at 10am-2pm in the UC Magnolia Room - stop by the
Philosophy table and say hello! There is also supposed to be lots of
free pizza and fun stuff at this event!
I also wanted to let you
all know that the American Association of University Women is sponsoring a
voter education event - Saturday October 12 at 9:30am in the lobby of the new
Sciences Building, they will have a demo of the new touch-screen voting
machines and a question and answer session with local government officials.
Sounds informative!
I also found that there is
someone named Jane Osborn who puts together a Valdosta
area community calendar, she sends it out by email (osbo1933@bellsouth.net)
and I will link it up to our department site as soon as I get the info!
Have a great weekend and don't
forget to come to DOGMA Monday night!

Here's the latest
Philosophy Club - Plato's Cave News!
Our newsletter is now
going out to 168 students, and continues to grow - thanks again for your interest
and support!
We do still have room on
our ballot for Philosophy Club officers, please email me at
chjames@valdosta.edu if you would like to be on the ballot! It won't
take up a lot of time at all, and you will be able to plan out what movies we
watch at movie nights, what debates we will have, and what topics we discuss.
It will also look great on your resume!
Don't forget, the Dogma
movie night and the election of club officers are on Monday, 9/30/02 at 8pm in the UC Theatre. We also have
movie nights reserved in the UC Theatre for these dates: 10/28/02, 2/11/03, 3/18/03.
We have decided to start
out a chapter of Phi Sigma Tau, and the application process has been started
with Lee Rice who is the head of all the chapters and a professor at Marquette University in Wisconsin.
Remember, if you have had at least two Phil classes with an A and a B, and
you are in the top 35% of your class, you qualify to get a silver key! The
membership fee is $25, which pays for the key. As for me, I will also pay a
$100 chapter start-up fee. I think we will have a great time doing an
induction ceremony too!
As to our ideas for future
events, I am still waiting for a second email message from Martha Leake in
Physics and Astronomy, as well as from Shirley Hardin in African American
Studies. I do think they both reacted positively to our ideas, which I think
we can take as permission to say they are co-sponsoring events with us. I am
also waiting to hear back a first time from Robin Vickery about ways to
contact other student organizations, namely College Republicans and Democrats
and the Students in Physical Sciences. Fortunately, one of the students in my
Philosophy of Science class is with the College Republicans, and another
student in my Honors Logic class is editing the Spectator campus newspaper,
so we will get things done one way or another!
There are more updates at
the new department website, including career information. Let me know what
you think about it, what else you would like to see in the links - it's a
site for you all as students at VSU, and we want it to be good for your needs
and to show that Philosophy is a great major!
http://teach.valdosta.edu/phi/
There is going to be a
regional conference for undergraduates soon, it's March 7-8, 2003 in Jacksonville at the University
of North Florida!
Everyone who has a philosophy paper to write for a class should think about
submitting it to this conference, it will also look wonderful on your resume
when you go out on the job market! The submission deadline is December
2, they want three copies of your paper, and it should be between 8-12 double
spaced pages. It should be sent to: David Fenner, Department of Philosophy, University of North Florida, Jacksonville,
FL 32224. (All the philosophy
faculty have copies of the flier for it too.) Don't be shy about sending
things out, just give it a try!

Hello Philosophy
Club! Hope the semester is chugging along nicely for everyone. A few news
items for you:
--- The elections for new
officers will take place at our Philosophical Film Night "Dogma",
on September 30, 2002
at 8pm in the UC Theatre.
We do still need people to be on the ballot, so please email me at
chjames@valdosta.edu if you are interested in running! It really isn't
much of a time commitment, but you get a powerful voice in what new
activities we do, and a good line for your resume/c.v.!
--- We have tutors who are
willing to help out anyone who might be struggling in the lower level
classes, like PHIL 2020 Logic, PHIL 2010 Fundamentals, and REL 2010 World
Religions! Contact Mike Holt, z_mikeh@yahoo.com
and Jessica Corbin, jmcorbin@valdosta.edu
and they will be happy to
arrange a session!
--- There is a social
being planned for all students, staff and faculty at Mike Stoltzfus' house on
Friday, October 11, from 3-6pm, 701 Pineridge Drive, near Azalea and Gornto.
Everyone is welcome to come and hang out! As an added bonus (and a possible
time change, I will let you know!), this may be the same day as a symposium
on love in Ari Santas' History of Ancient Philosophy class too!
--- Following up on
Physics/Space Time - Martha Leake emailed me and said that it sounds like a
great idea, she is working on mentioning it to the other Physics/Ast
faculty. She mentioned that their department does a capstone course as
well as a Students in Physical Sciences group, and we might work together
with them on it. She and I will be in contact more soon. Either
way, we will do something on that interest soon.
--- Following up on
Bamboozled with African American Studies - Shirley Hardin emailed me back to
say it sounds like a great idea, and she will try to email me again soon to
work it out further. (She seems incredibly busy on campus, as the one person
in a vital program it's understandable!)
--- We have a new
department website to announce!
http://teach.valdosta.edu/phi/
It includes links to
careers after majoring in Philosophy, the Spring classes, the current syllabi
we are using in this semester's classes, the Philosophy Club by-laws, the Phi
Sigma Tau honorary, some fun quotes about Philosophy from Monty Python's John
Cleese, and other fun information and upcoming events! Check it
out! (Suggestions are welcome, let me know if you would like to have
something on this site that isn't there!)
--- I would really like to
do a chapter of the Phi Sigma Tau honorary here. Check out the link to it, it
will take you to a college honorary central page, and from there you can find
it under "P" for "Phi". The requirements are really not
bad at all: you have to have 2 PHIL classes with an average grade above B (so
one A and one B makes it!) and be in the upper 35% of your graduation class.
I bet there are a lot of you out there who meet those requirements - want to
get a silver key? huh? it'll be fun!
Take care everyone, email
me or call me with any questions or ideas you have!

Just a note to let everyone
know what is on tap for Philosophy Club - Plato's Cave! First, thank
you to everyone who signed up with us at the Happening, glad to meet you
all! Remember, Kevin Smith's "Dogma" will be a free movie
night event on Monday,
September 30, 2002 at 8pm
in the UC Theatre! A display ad for Dogma will be in the Spectator on
September 19 also.
ELECTION TIME: Since it is
the beginning of a new year, we should probably hold our officer elections at
the movie night. We have more than one officer slot to fill, so please
contact me to be on the ballot! The 2-page club by-laws describe the
positions and are outside my office door, Ashley 110. I will also email
you the by-laws if you like.
FOLLOW UP ON YOUR IDEAS
-SPACE/TIME TALK: Jessica C had an idea for a talk about Space-Time
Theory, possibly combined with Physics/Astronomy/GeoSci. I emailed
Professor Martha Leake about it two days ago, and she will hopefully reply to
me soon. Even if their department doesn't want to do it, I have some cool
video on the topic that we could get together to see and talk about - a Nova
episode on wormholes, and an ABC News special on superstring theory.
FOLLOW UP ON YOUR IDEAS -
POLITICAL DEBATE WITH REPS&DEMS: I have also emailed the director
of student activities, Robin Vickery, to see if she would supply us with the
contact info for other campus clubs so we could organize a political debate
with the College Republicans and Democrats. Hopefully she will organize
a way for groups to get in touch and organize co-sponsored events soon.
FOLLOW UP ON YOUR IDEAS -
SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION: Mike H suggested that we have Jim Hill give his paper on
social constructionism at an event soon; I suggested that since Jim Hill is
teaching five classes this semester we might want to wait until spring
semester; but by all means let's ask him to do it when you all see fit!
FOLLOW UP ON YOUR IDEAS -
SPIKE LEE'S "BAMBOOZLED" WITH AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES: I have also
emailed Professor Shirley Hardin in African-American Studies about doing an
event together to show this film, hopefully she will reply soon too!
FUTURE MOVIE NIGHTS: Other
Philosophy Club Movie Nights are already scheduled in the UC Theatre for
Tuesday October 28 at 8-10pm,
Tuesday February 11 2003
at 8-10pm, and Tuesday March 18 2003 at 8-10pm. Let us know what ideas you
have for movies!
MORE BULLETIN BOARD INFO:
The Philosophy-related jobs section of the bulletin board outside my office
has more information about Cycorp, a software company in Austin, Texas that routinely hires Philosophy
majors to work as "ontological engineers." We also have info
about writing, editing, judicial/probation/paralegal, philosophical
counselling (an alternative to psychology), and 2-year ethics consultant
programs!
Be sure to email with any
other ideas that we should follow up on, and let me know what I can do for
you all. Using "Reply All" should let you reply to everyone
on our list, let me know if it doesn't work. And remember, let me know
if you are interested in a club office and being on ballot for the voting at
the Philosophy Club Movie Night on 9/30!!!
Take care!

Hello everyone,
I am Christine James, the
new faculty member in the Philosophy Department at VSU, and I wanted to send out
a message saying Hello to all the Philosophy/Religious Studies majors.
It's been wonderful meeting many of you in the classes I am teaching this
semester, I hope to meet you all soon! Some of you might be interested
in taking part in Plato's Cave/Philosophy Club; Michael Holt is the current
President, I'm the Faculty Advisor, and we are getting ready for some
exciting events!
Thursday, August 29, 1-4pm, Palms Quad and U.U., The
Happening
We will have a table, and a variety of lighthearted, philosophy-related
items, as well as candy!
Monday, September 30, 8pm,
University Center Theatre, Philosophical Movie Night co-sponsored
with the Interfaith Alliance, "Dogma" (The Kevin Smith-View
Askew tongue-in-cheek look at
faith, god, the problem of evil, and the logico-metaphysical relationship
between god's
omnipotence and the existence of all beings. It's funny as well as
meaningful!)
Other movie nights will come in November, February and March.
If you have other ideas
and suggestions, please do share them with us! We also need
officers! For your information and to elicit comments, I attached the
Plato's Cave By-laws to this message (a big thanks to Brad Matthews for
them!) FYI, the part about dues is traditionally not enforced.
Also, feel free to come by
my office door (Santas' old office, 110 Ashley) where I posted a variety of
opportunities for you:
-a list of around twenty philosophy publications that publish papers by
undergraduates
-information on upcoming undergraduate conferences where you could present
papers
-a page on the national philosophy undergraduate honorary society, Phi Sigma
Tau
-a list of upcoming professional conferences
-fliers about philosophy-related job opportunities and companies that
actively recruit
philosophy majors.
Feel free to email me
anytime; you can also email everyone who received this message at once by
using a "reply-all" command!
